Crime Stopper coordinator shares tips to keep your gifts safe
JACKSON, Tenn. – It’s the season of gratitude, and that comes for gifters and receivers. But in order to make the hand off you need to make sure you keep your gifts safe.

“The biggest thing people have to be aware of is just keep an eye out on your surroundings. That’s the most important,” said Lt. Mike Johnson, the 731 Crime Stoppers Coordinator. “And just be careful walking to your car. Have your keys ready and get in as soon as possible. If you see something suspicious, then naturally call 911 or go back into the store and get a security person in the store to walk out with you if you feel afraid.”
And if you have to visit multiple stores, make sure your items are secure in your vehicle.
“If you don’t have a SUV, naturally, put it in the trunk. You know, you don’t want to leave it out where there is the opportunity for somebody to walk by and see those gifts in there,” Johnson said. “If you have a SUV, try to take you something to cover it up with. Have a sheet, a blanket, anything in your car that you can cover that cover that up so at least they can’t see what you do have.”
And if you are a fan of online shopping, there is something you may want to add to your list.
“If you can afford one, a Ring camera is great. It will let you know when those packages are being dropped off. And so you can get them up as soon as possible. Have a neighbor, if you trust the neighbor, have them come over and get your taxes and put them up until you get home,” Johnson said.
He also shared there are multiple camera options and some can be less than $20.
The holidays can be a fun time, but it’s also a good time to stay up-to-date on safety tips.
