9-hour armed standoff results in arrest
November 21, 2023, Dyersburg police responded to the area of 104 West and Evansville in reference to a man waiving a gun around. Officers arrived around 4:15 p.m., and located the man later identified as James Yants, 44, Dyersburg TN, on the roof of a shed. Yants was armed with a handgun and refused to comply with officers. The Dyersburg Police Department Special Response Team was called to the scene where negotiators continued negotiations into the early morning. Around 1:30 a.m., Yants fired a round from the gun in the air and then surrendered without further incident. Yants was taken into custody and charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
