Be aware some holiday plants can be deadly to pets
JACKSON, Tenn.—Now that the holiday season is upon us, it is important to keep in mind what plants, trees, and flowers are considered dangerous for pets.
Many people may use these plants as festive holiday décor, but should be reminded that it could be deadly to their four-legged friends.
Among the popular holiday plants that are poisonous to animals include:
- Poinsettias
- Holly
- Mistletoe
- Amaryllis
- Pine Needles
- Christmas tree water
- Ivy
- Lillie
- Snowdrops
- Laurels
- Yew Tree
Many of these toxic plants, etc. can cause symptoms such as stomach upset, drooling, vomiting, gastrointestinal issues, low blood pressure, stumbling, skin rashes, low heart rate, lethargy, and seizures. The consumption of these various plants could lead to kidney failure or if not quickly addressed, even death.
Always be cautious when pets are left unattended near these plants, flowers or trees, and look for any unusual signs that could mean a pet has possibly consumed them. If you suspect a pet has been poisoned contact a pet healthcare professional as soon as possible.
