JMCSS presents its first literacy campaign

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Jackson-Madison County School System presented its first literacy campaign.

This event was begun in hopes of pushing students to increase their literacy scores. The idea is that this will instill a love and need to read in the students.

We spoke with Dr. Kimberly Quinn, the principal of Denmark Elementary School, who stated that they are trying to get families more involved in their child’s learning.

“We’re asking our parents to read for 20 minutes with their children and then those children log that they’ve read with their parent or read to their parent. And we celebrate our scholars at the end of each month that have done their reading log,” Quinn said.

Students are gifted with a trip to Books-A-Million as well as a gift card to buy books.

Quinn also stated that there is one big thing that parents can do that would help their children understand.

“The biggest thing a parent can do is practice good reading in front of their children. Read out loud to them, use flash cards for letter names and sounds,” Quinn said.

Even if parents don’t fully understand the curriculum, Quinn stated that the teachers are here for them. Whether it comes to finding books for your child to read or a fluency sheet, teachers are willing to help parents help their child succeed.

North Parkway Principal Dr. Ladonna Braswell stated that transitioning from elementary to middle school showed her the gaps that occurred in literacy during the pandemic.

Furthermore, she stated that their superintendent is very big on academics and that it’s one of the district’s goals.

“Literacy was one of those things. It is a foundation for everything. But literacy had to be a focal point in order for everything else to continue to grow and excel,” Braswell said.

The goal of this event is to raise awareness about the fact that this is a community issue.

Leaders say the more community members that become involved, the better the success rate for our youth.
