JACKSON, Tenn. — GoFundMe is an online platform that allows users to give and receive help to fulfill dreams and support important causes.

We spoke with GoFundMe spokesperson Angelique McNaughton, who shared some advice on donating or receiving funds through the platform.

McNaughton says while misuse of GoFundMe is actually rare, there are some signs to look out for to help avoid fake accounts.

McNaughton says the fundraiser should have a clear title, image and description. Make sure the organizer has a direct connection to the person or cause, ensure they’re being transparent about what they’re raising funds for, and pay attention to interaction online regarding the fundraiser, such as if family and friends are contributing or sharing it across social media.

“We have a dedicated team of trusted safety experts who are working around the clock to review fundraisers, and then they’re working directly with the organizers to ensure that people can give and receive help online in a safe manner,” McNaughton said.

Toddnetta Trice with the Better Business Bureau of the Mid-South reminds that GoFundMe is an accredited business, and there have been no recent reports of GoFundMe misuse in the West Tennessee area.
