WRAP official discusses domestic abuse

JACKSON, Tenn. — Domestic abuse is the leading cause of injury in women. That’s more than car accidents and muggings combined.

Now one organization is bringing awareness to this problem.

Wo/Men’s Resource and Rape Assistance Program, better known as WRAP, is raising awareness of domestic abuse.

On average, more than one in three women and one in four men in the United States will experience rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner.

One specific topic that was discussed was strangulation.

We spoke with Jenci Spradlin, the Development Coordinator at WRAP, who stated that in 2022, eight people lost their lives to domestic homicide in West Tennessee.

“Recently there was a domestic homicide here in Madison County. So we want people to understand that this happens,” Spradlin said.

Spradlin is speaking about 41-year-old Katazryna Legros, who was strangled to death by her husband on November 27.

“WRAP is here to help support those that find themselves in an unsafe relationship or an unhealthy relationship with our free and confidential service,” Spradlin said.

This also includes keeping you safe where you lay your head.

“We have two homes in West Tennessee. So for those that are wanting to flee their relationship and need to be in a safe and confidential place so that their partner may not know where they are, we have two safe homes, and those homes are confidential,” Spradlin said.

If by chance you’re worried about it affecting your job, WRAP has a plan for you.

“We do safety plan with them at work. We encourage them to work with their employer. So it’s important for them to have a good relationship with their employer and that their employer can help protect them while they’re at work,” Spradlin said.

No means no. Protect yourself and break the cycle of abuse.

This is not just a safe haven for women, but men and families are welcome to WRAP as well.
