Holiday travel to continue through to new year

JACKSON, Tenn. — Believe it or not, the holiday travel season is still in full swing.

Although Christmas is over, that does not mean that the holiday travel season has ended.

AAA says that over 115 million people are going to be traveling over 50 miles during the 10-day holiday period going all the way until 2024.

According to INRIX, a provider of transportation data, December 28 will be one of two busiest days to travel during this period. The other day was December 23.

The worst time to travel will be:

  • December 27 between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
  • December 28 and December 29, between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
  • December 30, between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

And on New Year’s Eve, they do not expect much traffic.

AAA has been tracking these numbers since 2000. This year, with 115 million, that makes this the second busiest travel period, coming behind 2019 with 119 million.

One of the best things you can do is plan.

One great way you can do this is by checking the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s SmartWay map to take a look at the latest traffic updates. You are also able to see crash reports and any road closures.

The year-end holiday travel period started on December 23 and will end on January 1.
