Front Passing Tonight, Cold Thursday, Wintry Mix/Snow Shot on Friday

WBBJ 7 Forecast Update

WBBJ 7 Forecast Update:

A system sitting just to our northwest is dumping snow in Missouri this evening. A front passed by this evening and will keep cooler weather around through next week. Highs may struggle to get above 40° on Thursday/Friday and we only top 50° once in the next 7 days, being on Sunday. Some flurries, light snow or a brief wintry mix looks possible on Friday, but we are not going to see much.. We will have the latest on just how cold things are going to get as well as who is most likely to see the snow and how much; coming up here.

TONIGHT:

A low pressure system will continue to spin just to our northwest and the will usher in plenty of clouds and a few shower chances overnight. Temperatures were too warm for a wintry mix on Wednesday with highs reaching the low to mid 50s. Chances for rain are not great and sit at 20% with the chances the best for areas north of Madison county tonight. The winds will be a bit blustery and come out of the west. Wednesday night lows will fall down to around 30°.

THURSDAY:

We are expecting a few showers during the day on Thursday. Depending on the timing of the showers a few flurries cannot be ruled out or a brief wintry mix as a front will move through. Chances for those showers are only 20% so most of us will not see much of anything at all. We will likely encounter a cloudy or mostly cloudy day though and it will be blustery behind the front. Highs on Thursday will be cold and only reach the low 40s. The winds will stay out of the west most of the day around 10 MPH. Thursday night will be chilly again falling back down to the low 30s again.

FRIDAY:

The best shot for some light snow this week will come during the day on Friday on the backside of a low pressure system. The best chance for a dusting of snow will be areas north and east of Jackson although some light snow looks possible in the Hub City as well Friday morning/afternoon.

The winds will start out of the northwest and shift to the west as the day goes on. Highs on Friday will be cold and probably will not even hit 40°. Friday night lows will fall down to around 30°. We are expecting a cloudy day on Friday but the clouds may try to clear out overnight into Saturday morning. If they do clear, some upper 20s will be likely Saturday morning.

THE WEEKEND:

We are looking at a pretty quiet but cool weekend leading up to New Year’s Eve. The winds will shift back to the southwest on Saturday helping to warm us back up to the upper 40s. We are also expecting the clouds to move out on Saturday but that could lead to a chilly night Saturday night with lows falling down to around 30°. Sunday highs will reach back into the low 50s but we should see a few less clouds during the day on Sunday as well. Temperatures will be in the 30s for those of you staying out late celebrating in the new year on Sunday night. The weekend forecast looks dry as of now but on New Year’s Day, a system is going to pass to our south and may look to impact some areas in the Mid South. We will be keeping a close eye on it as the week goes on.

NEXT WEEK:

A cold front will move through early on New Year’s Day making for a cold start to the new year. Highs on Monday will only reach the low 40s and mid 40s are expected on Tuesday. We should warm back up to the upper 40s by Wednesday and that will bring our next chance for some shower activity as well. There is a system on Monday that will pass just to our south but might increase the clouds a bit on New Year’s Day. Mostly sunny skies should return on Tuesday before the clouds build back on in for Wednesday. The winds will come out of the northwest to kick off the week behind the front. Overnight lows will be an issue, especially on Tuesday morning when low 20s will look to return to the region.

FINAL THOUGHT:

We could see our first snow of the season in West Tennessee later this week but it does not appear like it is going to have any major travel issues for those of you planning on traveling to our from the Mid South this week. A dusting or a quarter of an inch of snow cannot be ruled out, especially areas close to Kentucky Lake Friday morning. We are expecting a cold start to the new year as well.
