Several law enforcement agencies to offer free rides for NYE
JACKSON, Tenn. – For those of you who will be spending your New Year’s Eve with alcohol, there are local law enforcement agencies offering a resource that could help you avoid a DUI.
Every year on New Year’s Eve, the Martin Police Department offers a service to those in the city who need to get from place to place while drinking alcohol, without getting behind the wheel of a car.
“For several years now, we operate a safety bus where anyone who needs a ride to and from somewhere during the New Year’s Eve celebration, they can contact our dispatch center and the safety bus picks them up and carries them to wherever they need,” said Phillip Fuqua, the Assistant Chief of the Martin Police Department.
Assistant Chief of the Martin Police Department, Phillip Fuqua says that the safety bus has always been a very popular mode of transportation for partygoers in Martin.
“Usually on New Year’s Eve we’ll do around a hundred to 150 people we’ll give rides to,” Fuqua said.
For those of you in Henderson County, the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office offers the same type of transportation starting at 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.
Sheriff Brian Duke was a former Martin police officer and brought the idea from there to Henderson County when he became sheriff.
“It was such a success and I saw the benefits of it and I thought it was something that could really benefit Henderson County,” Duke said.
For residents of Henderson County, Duke said they could give you a ride anywhere to and from a location inside the county for free.
And yes, for those of you in Martin and Henderson County thinking this could be a trap, Duke assures you this is all about keeping people safe for the holiday.
“This is completely above board and legitimate. We just want people to get home safely,” Duke said.
