Brief Wintry Mix, Light Snow or Flurries, Up to a Dusting Coming Friday

WBBJ 7 Forecast Update

WBBJ 7 Forecast Update:

Some of us saw some light snow and flurries earlier today and some cannot be ruled out tonight either. The best shot for some light snow so far this season will come during the morning on Friday on the backside of an Alberta Clipper system dropping in from the north. Temperatures will be just cold enough in the morning for the cold rain to transition to a wintry mix or light snow, up to a dusting. We are not expecting accumulations for most of West Tennessee or any serious travel impacts, but it may make for a pretty morning for some. The snow chance looks to be before noon as we will warm back up into the upper 30s by the afternoon. Temperatures will remain cold though as we head into the new year as well. TONIGHT:

We saw some flurries and a few showers during the day on Thursday, but most didn’t see much. Chances for those showers or flurries sit at 30% tonight, so most of us will not see much of anything overnight. We saw a cloudy day and a mostly cloudy night can be expected. Highs on Thursday only reached the low 40s as it was cold all day. The winds will stay out of the west most of the night around 10 MPH. Thursday night will be chilly again falling back down to the low 30s.

FRIDAY:

The best shot for some light snow this week will come during the day on Friday on the backside of a low pressure system. The best chance for a dusting of snow will be areas north and east of Jackson although some light snow looks possible in the Hub City as well Friday morning/afternoon.

The winds will start out of the west and shift to the northwest as the day goes on. Highs on Friday will be cold and probably will not even hit 40°. Friday night lows will fall down to around 30°. We are expecting a cloudy day on Friday but the clouds may try to clear out overnight into Saturday morning. If they do clear, some upper 20s will be likely Saturday morning.

THE WEEKEND:

We are looking at a pretty quiet but cool weekend leading up to New Year’s Eve. The winds will shift back to the southwest on Saturday helping to warm us back up to the upper 40s. We are also expecting the clouds to move out on Saturday but that could lead to a chilly night Saturday night with lows falling down to around 30°. Sunday highs will reach back into the low 50s but we should see a few less clouds during the day on Sunday as well. Temperatures will be in the 30s for those of you staying out late celebrating in the new year on Sunday night. The weekend forecast looks dry as of now but on New Year’s Day, a system is going to pass to our south and may look to impact some areas in the Mid South. We will be keeping a close eye on it as the week goes on.

NEXT WEEK:

A cold front will move through early on New Year’s Day making for a cold start to the new year. Highs on Monday will only reach the low 40s and mid 40s are expected on Tuesday. We should warm back up to the upper 40s by Wednesday and that will bring our next chance for some shower activity as well. There is a system on Monday that will pass just to our south but might increase the clouds a bit on New Year’s Day. Mostly sunny skies should return on Tuesday before the clouds build back on in for Wednesday. The winds will come out of the northwest to kick off the week behind the front. Overnight lows will be an issue, especially on Tuesday morning when low 20s will look to return to the region. The next chance for showers for most us will return on Wednesday.

FINAL THOUGHT:

We could see our first snow of the season in West Tennessee later this week but it does not appear like it is going to have any major travel issues for those of you planning on traveling to our from the Mid South this week. A dusting or a quarter of an inch of snow cannot be ruled out, especially areas close to Kentucky Lake Friday morning. We are expecting a cold start to the new year as well.
