Chipping of the Greens to be held January 13

JACKSON, Tenn. – The City of Jackson and Keep Jackson Beautiful announced the return of Chipping of the Greens, a Christmas tree recycling initiative that will take place on January 13.

This is a great alternative for holiday clean-up once Christmas has come and gone.

Chipping of the Greens

“It allows us to chip them up, bag them up, and give them back to the citizens to use as mulch around trees, flower beds, that kind of thing,” said JD Sims, the Superintendent of Groundskeeping for the City of Jackson.

Not only is this good for the environment, but it’s also convenient for residents.

“But it keeps them out of the landfill, keeps the landfills from getting clogged up with all of this. They are fire hazards, so you know, it just provides them an avenue of disposal,” Sims said.

Residents can drop off live Christmas trees now until January 12 at North Park, Liberty Garden, or the city’s fire training center.

“We do ask that there is no artificial trees and they do remove all of the lights and ornaments before they drop them off at the drop-off points,” Sims said.

The trees will be recycled into mulch and available for pickup on January 13 starting at 9:30 a.m.

“It’s something we’ve done for a long time, and we are proud to be able to keep this long-standing tradition going,” Sims said.

Residents who would like their Christmas trees picked up can call the Health and Sanitation Department or make a new request via the Ready 311 app.

For more information on drop-off locations and how pickups work, call the Health and Sanitation Department at (731) 425-8545.
