Hub City Classic comes to a close

JACKSON, Tenn.—Area Relief Ministries held their last night of the annual Hub City Classic Christmas basketball tournament.

High school boys and girls basketball teams near the Jackson area were able to compete to be this year’s champions.

This is a fundraiser for Area Relief Ministries and the programs they have throughout the year.

“It goes to fund all of our programs, our Room in the Inn programs, Shelter program, our Open Arm Day Center, our Fresh Start program for transitional work program, job training for the men, women, anyone that’s homeless. So that’s what it goes towards being able to provide services for our homeless population,” said Fred McKinnie, Director of Operations, A.R.M.

A.R.M. receives money from the tickets to the game and from teams entering the game.

This is also a fundraiser for Liberty Tech High School.

“This is basketball’s biggest fundraiser of the year because we have all of the concessions and we’ve had about 1,000 people in every day this week. So we sold out every night and we intend to sell out tonight,” said Lonnie Starks, Head Basketball Coach-Men, Liberty Tech.

This is the second year this event has been held at Liberty Tech, in the previous years it was hosted at the Oman Arena.

And teams are able to walk home with trophies.

“There will be championship trophies at the end for for the teams that win, and we give a runner-up trophy as well its MVP’s, all tournament teams, all take place here,” Starks said.

This year the Crusader’s had a goal on how this money should benefit both teams.

“We need new uniforms. About every 3-4 years you have to buy new uniforms. National High School Federation has changed the way uniforms are displayed on your chest this year, so we have got to get the new uniforms because the old ones we have are now obsolete,” Starks said.

Some of the most anticipated games were during this weekend’s games.

One fan said, “Lets go Chester Co. Eagles, a dub number 2.”

“A dub number 2,” said another fan.

Congratulations to the Chester Co. High School girls’ and North Side High School boys’ teams for both placing first in this year’s tournament.
