First city council meeting of 2024 held Tuesday

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Jackson City Council met for the first time in the new year.

It was a fairly quick meeting to start 2024 for the Jackson City Council as the agenda was pretty light.

They started the meeting by recognizing participants in the Trash for Cash program. This is a program that started a while back. Mayor Scott Conger spoke more about it.

“So we started trash for cash two years ago. That was a presentation from our Youth Council at the time,” the mayor said. “It’s any group that wants to raise money on behalf of a non-profit, a non-profit, or not just a 501(c)(3), but you know a church group, softball team, whatever can do that and do a mile for $100.”

The council also voted on a contract extension with Stadium 1 Software LLC for the Sportsplex.

Mayor Conger says that this should help them save some money.

“So we have a software system. It’s an extension of the contract that they have. It’s an all-service system from tickets, to gates, to concession stand, and gift shop, everything like that. I actually think it is saving us $7,500 this year because it’s doing a flat fee instead of a percentage of sales,” Conger said.

One of the final things the council voted on was the purchase of eight paratransit vans for the Jackson Transit Authority. Mayor Conger went into more detail about these.

“I think it will improve. They’re replacement vans, so I don’t know if they’re increasing the number of the fleet. But some of those vans have to go into rotation every so many hundred thousand miles or so to replace those vans to make sure that we’re providing that transportation in a safe manner,” Conger said.

Back on December 28, Mayor Conger talked about some of the plans for the new year, saying they plan on making some construction projects on the civics center, finishing the construction on the animal care center, and starting construction on Airways.

Mayor Conger says all of the things that have been talked about can hopefully start getting the ball rolling in this new year.
