Professionals gather for details on how to bring the ‘farm to school’

MARTIN, Tenn. – Students are being impacted through hands-on learning.

On Monday, many professionals gathered to increase their knowledge in “Farm to School,” a school nutrition program.

The program consists of high school students growing fresh produce in agriculture programs for meals at school, according to the SNP Program Enrichment webpage.

Those in attendance were able to connect with different categories of professionals including farmers, state agencies, and school nutritionists.

The training started with an introduction to the program and how schools could get involved in this growing program.

Hearing from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture was also on the agenda, along with information on best practices and grant information.

Farm to school is made up of these main categories, education, procurement of local foods, and school gardens.

Students can get an up-close look at what it takes to make their food, grow in pride for the food they will be able to eat in their cafeterias, and among many other benefits.

Farmers, producers, community partners, and schools will have an impact in changing the lives of these students and the way they understand the food they partake in.
