PRESS RELEASE FROM THE SALVATION ARMY OF JACKSON:
The Salvation Army of Jackson Mobilizes Response to Impending Cold Weather
Jackson, TN – With West Tennessee bracing for an imminent cold snap, The Salvation Army of Jackson is gearing up to play a crucial role in providing relief to those in need. Meteorologists are predicting plunging temperatures into the teens and single digits starting this weekend, coupled with snowfall, making it imperative for local agencies to collaborate in safeguarding vulnerable members of the community.
Major John Edmonds, Corps Officer with The Salvation Army in Jackson, revealed that the organization has been asked by the City of Jackson-Madison County Emergency Management to join efforts in supporting the establishment of a shelter at the First United Methodist Church, located at 200 S Church St. This facility will cater specifically to women and children facing the harsh weather conditions.
“Our mission at The Salvation Army is deeply rooted in addressing human needs in the name of Jesus. As we face this impending cold weather crisis, it is our duty and privilege to extend our assistance to those who are most vulnerable in our community,” stated Major Edmonds.
Working in tandem with Skyline Church of Christ, The Salvation Army will be operating its commercial kitchen at their Allen Avenue facility to prepare hot meals, which will then be transported via their mobile kitchen unit to the shelter at FUMC. The meal service is scheduled to begin on Sunday with dinner at 5:00pm, and 40 meals will be provided for breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day.
The Salvation Army is working in collaboration with the Regional Inter-Faith Association (RIFA), who will be supporting the men’s shelter at the Carl Perkins Civic Center with meals.
Major Edmonds emphasized, “Our partnership with Skyline Church of Christ, RIFA, and the City of Jackson reflects our commitment to working together with the broader community to ensure that our neighbors have access to shelter, food, and warmth throughout this challenging period. This is an extension of our ongoing mission to serve others in the name of Jesus.”
The Salvation Army urges all individuals exposed to the elements to seek shelter beginning this weekend, emphasizing the potentially life-threatening nature of the impending weather conditions.
For those interested in supporting The Salvation Army’s relief efforts, monetary donations are the most effective way to contribute. These funds will be utilized to purchase essential food and supplies needed to sustain the operation. Contributions can be made online at www.SalvationArmyJacksonTN.org or by mailing a check to The Salvation Army, PO Box 486, Jackson, TN 38302.
The Salvation Army extends its appreciation to the community for their ongoing support and solidarity in addressing the needs of our neighbors during this cold snap and always.
