Bolivar celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

BOLIVAR, Tenn.—A celebration began to remember a man with class and a vision of equality.

Let freedom ring! The 32nd annual Hardeman County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade took place in downtown Bolivar.

We asked several young people what this parade meant to them.

12-year-old Ahmir Woods stated that Dr. King has helped him see bigger dreams for himself.

“He did a lot to really, kind of, impact the world to make it what it is today with his famous “I Have a Dream Speech,” Woods said.

And that’s not all that this event has brought awareness to.

Woods also knows more about self worth.

“Really know my value as the young man I am right now. I can maybe have a change in the world,” Woods said.

Dr. King has touched Woods life in a way that makes him want to pursue a career to provide for his family.

“Personally, I’m pursuing basketball right now, so I’m trying to go to the NBA when I get older,” Woods said.

Dr. King’s legacy continues to touch the hearts of minds of our young people.

Bolivar Middle School students, Jaiden Hill and Kamarion Turner wanted to weigh in on what Dr. King has done for them.

“He gave our freedom to us,” Hill said.

“Stop racism. Just keep looking forward,” Turner said.

Hill stated that he has ideas that he would like to implement to help the community.

“Have free food for everybody, like for the homeless and stuff. I want everybody to have like stuff that we all need,” Hill said.

Out of the mouths of babes!

Dr. King stated that he may not live to see the dream but it’s evident that the dream is still flourishing.

The Chairman of Hardeman County, Monroe Woods, stated that he plans to have this event every year in memory of Dr. King.
