JEA: TVA asks consumers for voluntary reductions in power use

The following is an announcement from the Jackson Energy Authority:

JACKSON, Tenn. – According to the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the recent snow/extreme cold  temperatures our area is experiencing could set an all-time record for power demand, which could cause a tight  power supply situation.

Together with TVA, the generator of the electricity we distribute to our community, we  are monitoring the upward trend in electricity use and its impact on our regional power supply. TVA is asking  customers across the valley to voluntarily reduce the use of all non-essential electricity until further notice. This  will help ensure a continued supply of power to essential services throughout the Tennessee Valley region and  avoid interruptions in service. 

“This is a precautionary measure,” said Leslie Jones, Manager of Operations at Jackson Energy Authority.  “Anytime we experience a period of extreme cold, it significantly increases the demand for electricity. Together  with TVA, we are proactively taking steps to reduce energy consumption by asking our customers to take small  practical steps that can have a big impact on our ability to meet the demand for electricity.” 

TVA is using all available resources, purchasing available power from neighboring utilities, and crews from TVA  and local power companies are working around the clock to make power available to consumers. 

TVA and local power companies also have cut back on power use in their facilities by adjusting thermostats;  reducing lighting and taking other measures to reduce electricity consumption. 

Officials of the 153 local power companies in the Tennessee Valley are asking all electric power consumers – residential, commercial and industrial — to cooperate in reducing power usage during this critical situation. Here  are some quick and easy ways to make an impact: 

• Lower your thermostat to 68°F or a temperature that is both comfortable and safe 
• Set your ceiling fan to spin clockwise, which pushes warm air down 
• Wear additional layers and bundle up to stay warm 
• Postpone using large electric appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, and   cooking equipment util the warmest part of the day when demand is lower 
• Turn off lights, appliances, and other non-essential electrical equipment 

Updates and notifications will be provided on social media and website for the duration of the situation.
