Thursday fire leaves Gibson County business damaged

HUMBOLDT, Tenn. — A late afternoon fire left a Gibson County business damaged as firefighters worked to bring it under control.

Fire crews rushed to the Stewart Finance building in Humboldt Thursday afternoon to find it was engulfed in smoke.

“We responded and sure enough we saw smoke coming out of every corner of the building. So we attempted to make entry, and unfortunately, the smoke was a little bit too thick for us to be able to do anything inside. By the time we backed out and reassessed the situation, unfortunately, we believe there may have been flashover or some kind of explosion that forced us to an exterior attack,” said Capt. Alexander Trudo, with the Humboldt Fire Department.

There were no injuries reported and fire crews believed no one was inside the building when the fire broke out.

Trudo says they called Gibson County’s Fire Department in to assist them.

He says flames weren’t the main problem for crews fighting this fire.

“The smoke was so intense. We believed it may have been above us. We weren’t able to see initially, but once we were able to finally start hitting it from angles, that was the biggest problem,” Trudo said.

Captain Trudo says Thursday’s cold temperatures didn’t hinder them in fighting the fire.

He also says that the biggest and only issue was seeing where the smoke was coming from.

At this time, the fire is still under investigation.
