Family rescues calf from frozen pond in Atwood

ATWOOD, Tenn. – One family had to rescue one of their calves from an icy pond in freezing temperatures.

According to the family, Hannah and Zach Fowler headed out to feed the cows and break the ice around the pond like they do each morning. But the daily chore soon turned into a rescue mission.

Hannah Fowler tells us what it was like making the discovery.

“And I was out there feeding and he was out there at the pond and I could just hear him yelling. And I didn’t know what was going on so I ran over there and he was like there’s a calf out there. And she was just out there in the middle of the pond,” Hannah Fowler said.

The family says they were able to pull the calf part of the way out and used a winch to free her from the pond, then quickly used the snow around them to help dry off the calf.

From there, the calf was taken indoors to be dried off and warmed up.

The family says the calf is now being kept in a safe place with her mother until the snow and ice melt.
