Homegoing service held for Camya Young

HUMBOLDT, Tenn.—Today many people gathered to pay homage to a special young lady.

Many family and friends have gathered together here at the service for 14-year-old Camya Young.

In the Thomas Ray Boykin Gymnasium at Humboldt Junior and Senior High School was a marquee that stated, “Camya Strong.”

Since birth, Camya suffered from congenital heart disease.

Before her 13th birthday, Camya’s family discovered that she had a leaking heart valve that would require her to have a heart transplant.

She received the transplant September of 2023.

Unfortunately, Camya passed away on January 18th.

Today, community members, doctors, family and friends gathered to pay tribute to this strong young lady.

We spoke to Kenneth Hollis, a 7th and 8th grade teacher, who had nothing but positive praises to give to Camya.

“She was an amazing student. I would see her in the hallways when she got here from her 7th grade to her 8th grade year. Her sister is my Student Council Secretary and her mom is just an amazing person, doing amazing things in the community and her grandmother also teaches here,” Hollis said.

Hollis further stated to me that Camya has made such a huge impact in her 14 years of life.

“Phenomenal young lady, like as you can see today, shows that she has truly made a difference that I don’t think has ever been seen before,” Hollis said.

Hollis says that he has learned to give all he can to his students while he has the opportunity.

“As an educator, you do everything that you can for these children because from 7:30-3:30, they’re yours. They’re your responsibility and you find comfort in knowing that you had those moments and then if you’re faith based, you find comfort in the fact that God makes no mistakes,” Hollis said.

Hollis wanted to encourage young girls and boys everywhere with this piece of advice.

“There’s a poem that they talk about, that always says you have a beginning date and you have an end date but there’s a dash in between those, so let’s always make sure that we make that dash all the way worthwhile,” Hollis said.

You will be remembered, Camya Arielle Young.

During the service, Humboldt Junior and Senior High paid tribute to Camya with a special cheer.
