Mark Heart Disease Awareness Month with tips to remain healthy

JACKSON, Tenn. — All month long, doctors’ offices and clinics are highlighting the importance of heart disease and remaining healthy.

According to the CDC, in 2021, in 33 seconds, one person from the United States dies of heart disease.

Ways to prevent an untimely death due to heart disease include having your heart tested.

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center says there are three tests that can help with the diagnosis of heart disease.

Aside from the test, letting your physician or doctor know your family’s history of prior heart disease is important.

“We oftentimes have more in-depth discussions about family history, diet, and physical activity habits, as well as delve a little bit more deeply, not only into the typical cholesterol and lipid profile but oftentimes some more advanced lipid testing that can give us a better sense of what someone’s risk of heart and vascular disease might be,” said Wesley Milks, with the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

It is important to remain active as well as eat healthy to lower the risk of being diagnosed with heart disease.

Symptoms to look out for when it comes to heart disease include poor circulation in legs, inherited high cholesterol, and a family history of heart disease. But there are tests to help before it’s too late.

“The coronary calcium score is a screening test that people can use to determine if that plaque-forming or atherosclerosis process is active in the body. And if so, what can we do in terms of an individualized prevention plan?” Milks said.

Some doctors suggest it is better to get ahead of the disease before it’s too late.
