City council votes on license plate reader tech, other items
JACKSON, Tenn. – The Jackson City Council met Tuesday morning for their February meeting.
It was a fairly quick city council meeting that began with the council voting on a budget amendment for various paving equipment. Mayor Scott Conger talked about what they will be used for.
“That will be able for us to go in to mill and pave our parking lots that we are responsible for in our parks and also smaller residential streets,” Conger said.
The city will be able to get a roller, a paver, and a sweeper. They also voted on a resolution to authorize the Jackson Police Department to use Automatic License Plate Recognition technology with their Flock cameras.
“Automated License Plate Reader technology. So it updates the contract to allow them to put those Flock cameras on state highways,” he said.
Examples Conger used were Highland, the Bypass, Parkway, Highway 70, and Highway 18. There was also a vote for a contract for a funding feasibility evaluation for the Oman Arena subarea.
Mayor Conger went into detail about what exactly this entails.
“So this will be for us for the feasibility to apply for an implementation grant, which could be upwards of $35 million to some deconstruction and construction to Allenton Heights,” Conger said.
The council also voted on a contract with Premier Property Services regarding them being sent out to remove any illegal dumping.
“We can send them out to pick it up, and so we’re not charging a fine. We’re charging a fee for service to curb illegal dumping. So if we’re charging a fee for service as opposed to $50, they’re getting charged $700-$800 to get that picked up,” Conger said.
There were also talks about the Jackson Animal Care Center towards the end of the meeting.
It was said that this center will have 140 spaces for kennels, and it will be 10,000 square feet.
It was also said that this would double the capacity of the Jackson Animal Care Center.
