Chiefs’ Trey Smith recounts experience during Super Bowl parade shooting
JACKSON, Tenn. — Following the horrific scene in Kansas City during the Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade, West Tennessee native and current Kansas City Chiefs player, Trey Smith, shares his thoughts on what happened.
Smith says the day was very similar to the last time they had a championship parade. He was enjoying the celebration when he learned there was an active shooter near Union Station.
“I just remember the security guard ushering us through the doors quickly, saying, you know, ‘come on hurry up, hurry up, hurry up,'” Smith said. “Okay this is not a joke, this is a life or death situation.”
Smith and teammates were forced to run to safety and take shelter, bringing people along with them.
“So right before I run in there, there’s like a little kid in front of me, so I just grab him, yank him,” Smith said. “So you’re hopping in here with me buddy. I don’t know how many people there were in the closet, maybe 20. Plus one of my teammates, my long snapper James Winchester is very instrumental in helping keep people calm. We end up getting the green light to be able to get out there we end up walking to the buses.”
The buses started to fill with frightened spectators who were trying to escape the danger.
“This little boy was with his father, he was just a little hysterical. He’s just panicked. Ya know he’s scared. He doesn’t know what’s going on,” said Smith. “I had the WWE belt on me the entire parade and I was thinking man, what can I do to help him out? So I just handed him the belt and said ‘hey buddy you’re the champion. No one’s gonna hurt you. We got your back. No one’s gonna hurt you. We got your back. He was looking out the window and seeing people reacting away they’re trying to get out of that situation. So I’m like, ‘here you go buddy this is yours. Again no one’s gonna hurt you when you’re with us. We’re gonna keep you protected, you’re gonna be a-okay, you’re gonna be alright.”
Smith talks about how a situation like this is so frustrating.
“I’m pretty angry,” Smith said. “Cause it’s senseless violence. You know someone lost their life today. You have children that are injured. You have children that are traumatized. The families and the people who were impacted. The city of Kansas City.”
Smith went on to say that their hearts go out to those affected and how they are thinking and praying for them.
Smith also says the city is going to stand up together and remain strong.
