City of Jackson continues Black History Month celebrations
DOWNTOWN JACKSON, Tenn. — It was an exciting Friday evening in downtown Jackson, as City Hall filled with residents to shine a spotlight on culture and history.
During February, the city is showcasing visual and performing art from members of the city’s black community, in honor of Black History Month.
Community members are able to showcase their talents through music, poetry, and dance.
Local performers spoke on what it means to be given a space to express themselves.
“I know that my grandmother’s tears were because she didn’t think a day like this would ever exist, but to be standing here in her stead is a beautiful picture of how far we have come as Americans,” shared singer Ebondy Taylor.
“I feel very fortunate that we are able to do this. That we are able to bring bits of our culture and pieces of who we are and what makes us tick and what makes us feel most at home. I’m glad we’re able to share and express that with other people around the city,” said dancer Dana Jones.
