Person injured in Milan house fire, investigation ongoing
MILAN, Tenn. — A fire that occurred Sunday morning that resulted in one victim being hospitalized is currently being investigated.
The Milan Fire Department was dispatched to a fire around 9:08 a.m. February 18.
One of the firefighters at the station on Trenton Highway noticed the home in flames before they arrived.
We spoke to John Williams, the assistant Fire Chief, who stated that the department had a great response time to the incident.
“They had a less than a two minute response time, which is very good for our fire department,” Williams said. “The initial report was that there was someone inside of the home.”
He stated that the main concern at the time was not just the blaze.
“Their focus was totally on rescuing the person that was inside of the house. Firefighting came second. People are more important than structures are,” Williams said.
It was a two-story wood frame construction home. Williams stated that the smoke was heavy coming from the second floor and the attic. Thanks to a little help, Williams stated that they had a positive outcome.
“They worked in conjunction with the Milan Police Department and were able to rescue that person from the house who was taken to a local hospital and then airlifted to Regional One Med in Memphis,” said Williams.
Williams had this to say in regards to the injured person from the fire:
“I think that right now, we just need to leave it where it’s at and let the family have some time.”
Williams stated that they hope to get updates within the next couple of days.
However, he did give details on how they managed to put out the fire in this very large structure.
“A lot of that fire is in the attic space. It’s hard to get to those fires, and so they have to go to the gable end and open those up to be able to access the fire inside of that space.”
It took some time to get the fire completely extinguished.
“The guys got there, like I said, this morning, they had a two minute response time so they were there from 9:10 this morning to about 2 o’clock this afternoon,” Williams stated.
Williams went even further on the details of the damage from the home.
“If I were guessing, I would say that the insurance company is gonna claim it as a total loss. The smoke damage is definitely bad throughout the entire home.”
Williams wanted to show his appreciation by saying thank you to a few people.
“The City of Atwood and Carroll Fire Department, Madison County Fire Department, Gibson County Fire Department. Without all of these people working together, I don’t think that we would have been able to accomplish what we did today.”
Williams stated that it takes an act of courage and bravery to handle this type of situation and he is very proud of the teamwork that took place.
Williams wanted to clear the air and let the public know despite rumors on social media, no firefighters were injured.
