Doctor shares insight for youth to avoid sports injuries

JACKSON, Tenn. — Some of your favorite things to do can be the hardest on the body.

Dr. Nirav Pandya spoke on the consequences of sports specialization.

This professor of orthopedic surgery gave his insight about young people’s participation in sports.

Youth athletes are devoting themselves to one sport. This produces the risk of overuse injuries.

Sports that injuries are normally seen in are soccer, baseball and basketball.

This starts in children as young as seven years old.

“Part of the reason that this is occurring is that young bodies aren’t developed to be doing the same thing again and again,” Dr. Pandya said. “So if you’re a baseball player and you’re throwing a ball year round, or you’re a soccer player and you’re training year round, your muscles need rest.”

Those who play multiple sports are more likely to make it to the next level and have longer careers.
