Jackson students take part in statewide tornado drill

JACKSON, Tenn. — Every second counts during severe weather, and one local elementary school practices a tornado drill to ensure students are safe and sheltered if one occurs.

As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, Alexander Elementary took part in Thursday’s statewide tornado drill.

Faculty and staff directed students outside of classrooms and into hallways away from windows and doors.

Students were able to practice the safe position, which is to get down low, face the wall, and use your arms to protect your head and neck.

“We want to make sure our students are aware of where they need to go in case of a tornado,” said Principal Shannon Davis. “We had the emergency management service here with us just to kind of guide us through the process so that our students know exactly where to go in case of emergencies.”

Tennessee’s Severe Weather Awareness Week continues into Saturday.
