Local woman shares how she preserved her hair during chemotherapy
JACKSON, Tenn. — One young woman shares her story of how technology saved her hair.
Jessica Barnett, a cancer survivor, discussed with us how she preserved her hair during chemotherapy.
Jessica was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer.
Her oncologist suggested she try scalp cooling.
This is a cool cap that goes on your head before chemotherapy.
Scalp cooling reduces the amount of drugs that reach the hair follicles.
Jessica was able to save eighty percent of her hair thanks to this treatment.
Although it takes a few hours, Barnett stated that she was so thankful for the process.
“It allowed me to keep a part of myself during that treatment that when everything is chaotic and scary, you feel like you still have a piece of yourself that was before the diagnosis,” said Barnett.
This treatment works on both men and women who take chemotherapy.
