For the month of March, Scott hopes to inspire her children to pick up a book.

“I have been giving trivia questions to the kids about different books and whoever guesses it first will get a prize,” said Scott.

Scott stated that they participated in Read Across America, where the students dressed up as their favorite book character.

She says the kids really like the twenty book challenge.

That is where the students read at least twenty books throughout the year and when they finish those book, at the end of the year, we will have a big celebration,” said Scott.

She says that she can tell what great impact reading has had on the middle school students.

“Sometimes I can tell by the books that they’re checking out that they are doing well and growing, but I would say that the teachers seeing the growth,” said Scott.

But it’s not always easy.

“It’s just a constant thing. You’re just struggling to find something for them to do to get their attention. You have to make it fun for them and then they might get a little excited it,” said Scott.

“You’re going to need to have literacy for the rest of your life and if you want to be successful, you need to know how to read,” said Scott.

She stated that this doesn’t just start with teachers and librarians, but parents at home should also be active in their child’s learning.

“Read with your child at home, model reading with your child. Those are a few things you can do,” said Scott.
