Local nonprofit embodies Tennessee’s volunteer spirit
HARDIN COUNTY, Tenn. — When it comes to serving their community, a local nonprofit is excited to bring information and resources.
Tennessee is known as the Volunteer State for a reason, and it is nonprofits like Voices of Savannah that give that name meaning.
“Voices of Savannah started in May of 2021, and it was a group of like-minded individuals that came together and said, hey, we want to help our community and offer services and we have continued doing that,” said Deborah Shaw, Director of Voices of Savannah.
Shaw has been with this nonprofit since the beginning, which has brought many resources together for their community, from various trainings to providing warming stations during the snow.
“We work with families, we work with individuals, you know a lot of people we come in contact with our weekly food distribution. -butted- they don’t have to be a Hardin County resident, they can be a State of Tennessee resident to participate in those programs. So, we do, we encompass people from all walks of life in various circumstances,” said Shaw.
Voices of Savannah also serves children, and will be hosting a summer camp this year.
“Children, 5 to 13 and we’ll have the opportunity to work with them over an 8-week period with doing a life skills curriculum,” said Shaw.
Some of those camp topics include drug awareness, and financial literacy.
And Voices of Savannah isn’t alone in their mission as many are involved in their work.
“I love the partnerships that we’ve been able to develop in the two and a half years. We have great partnerships. We work a lot with our health department, and have developed partnerships with area businesses, churches, and other nonprofits in the community.
The summer camp will be from June 3rd through August 2nd.
Registration fee is $75, and each week is an additional $75.
