Humboldt High School offers students access to college courses at no cost

HUMBOLDT, Tenn. — Students at one West Tennessee high school can now attend college classes.

Humboldt Junior and Senior High School is offering students at the top of their class the opportunity to attend Jackson State Community College, free of charge, through a grant.

This means the juniors who signed up for the program will graduate high school with an associates degree in either business or heath science.

With their associates degree, they can go directly to a four year university with transferrable credits that could fast track them toward a bachelors degree.

The classes will be taught at Jackson State’s Gibson County Center and the high school will bus them to the location daily.

This afternoon, the students attending the program signed on the dotted line to now be a Jackson State Green Jay in addition to already being a Humboldt Viking.

“This is a huge opportunity for these students because they are now getting two years of basically free education, and they’re not having to pay room and board, they’re not having to pay the university tuition rates. I mean this is going to save these families thousands of dollars,” said Sherry Channell, Director for Jackson State Community College, Gibson County Center.

This program has already been implemented at Trenton High School.
