Haywood County High students, alumni celebrate National Ag Week

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — Haywood County High School hosted “Ag Career Day” on Wednesday morning.

The event brought students, FFA alumni, and community partners together to celebrate National Ag Week.

“I think this event was started kinda in response to National FFA Week, when kids had been driving their tractors and they were not able to do so. And so Ag industry leaders in the county reached out to people to try to change that,” said Tracey Sullivan, UT Extension Western Region Agriculture and Natural Resources Program Leader.

Many students and alumni drove their tractors to school for an educational session where FFA alumni, UT Extension leaders, Tennessee Farm Bureau representatives, and other agricultural organizations spoke on the importance of Ag in Tennessee.

The session included topics such as why farming is important, how to succeed in your future career, available job paths upon graduation, and how to stand out as young professionals.

“We also had businesses come talk to the students about possible agriculture careers and the importance of the next generation growing up and getting a career in agriculture and really helping us out,” said Molly Joyner Haywood County High senior and FFA president.

Tate Cronin with the West Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center says the event was attended by over 100 students and alumni, including over a dozen middle schoolers who gained additional insight into agriculture and how it impacts their lives.

“I just hope they take away that agriculture is a means of survival, and that it is important for everybody in the world,” said Madison Lewis, Career and Technical Education Director for Haywood County School System.
