Hundreds of dogs take over Jackson Fairgrounds for annual show
JACKSON, Tenn. — The Jackson Tennessee Dog Fanciers Association is hosting their annual dog show at the Jackson Fairgrounds.
Cathy Jones, the dog show chairman for the association, tells us when you can attend the shows to watch the competition.
“It’s going to go from Thursday through Sunday. Four days of shows that we’re doing with Tupelo Kennel Club,” Jones said.
Hundreds of dogs compete in a vast amount of categories and are all looking for the top prize. Jones tells us a little bit more about the actual competition.
“Has anybody seen Westminster Kennel Club on television? It’s the same thing. They judge each breed on their own standard. Then they move up. They have the best of breed, and then they go into the groups and there are seven different groups. Of the seven different groups they pick the winner of the show,” Jones explained.
This particular show in Jackson has been going on for 20 years. Jones talks about why it is nice to have a show here in West Tennessee.
“Well it’s a local show. All of our people were having to travel 200 plus miles to go to dog shows,” Jones said. “So several people got together and started the kennel club here so that it would be local.”
Jones says it takes a lot of training to have these dogs become competitive in these shows.
“People start the day they’re born. Stacking them and learning how to stack. We also have obedience. Sit, stay, come,” said Jones.
Jones also talked about how the Fanciers Association promotes the study of, breeding, and exhibition of purebred dogs.
This event is free and open to the public, however, only dogs that are entered into the show can be present.
