Local college student awarded prestigious scholarship by MADW
JACKSON, Tenn. — A local college student is the recipient of a generous scholarship.

The Madison Area Democratic Women awards its 4th annual Sue Shelton White Scholarship to Chelsey Carpenter of Jackson.
Carpenter received the 25-hundred dollar scholarship this afternoon at Jackson City Hall.
Carpenter is a student in the Memphis College of Urban and Theological studies at Union University, majoring in applied psychology.
Carpenter won this scholarship after writing an essay with the title “Women in 2024: voting, winning and leading.”
She shares how excited she is to receive this scholarship to continue her education.
“I am humble, I am grateful, I am ecstatic, I could go on and on and on. To know that I have a financial investment into my future really does my heart glad,” said Carpenter.

Dr. Liz Mayo, President of Madison Area Democratic Women spoke about who they want to support most with this scholarship.
“Specifically, we want to support women who are trying to work and balance family life and a whole lot of other things while improving their lives,” said Mayo.
The annual scholarship was established by the Madison Area Democratic Women in honor of Sue Shelton White, the West Tennessee Suffragist and
Lawyer who played a pivotal role in winning the equal right to vote for women.
