Lawn care takes center stage as Earth Month starts
JACKSON, Tenn. — With April being Earth Month, homeowners are once again embracing the outdoors and taking steps to make sure their lawns are in tip-top shape for the summer season.
April is also national Lawn Care Month, so there’s no better time to turn attention back to lawns.
There are a number of things homeowners can do when it comes to sustainably establishing, and maintaining their lawns, and the first step is picking the right grass for the climate.
“For Tennessee, being in the transition zone, it can have both cold season and warm season grasses. So, cold season grasses examples would be, like, Tall Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass and for your warm season, it would be something like Bermuda grass and Zoysia grass so picking the right grass type is the key,” Dr. Lakshmy Gopinath, Turf Scientist for Miracle-Gro.
More tips include embracing native turf grass species, being efficient with water usage, mowing, fertilizing, and being proactive about lawn care by starting early.
Research suggests that the work is worth it.
Lawns prevent pollution from water runoff, cool the atmosphere and psychological benefits including reduced stress.
