Sarah Belle Day
Sarah Belle Day, age 84, a beloved member of our community, passed away on April 1, 2024, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. She was born on December 9, 1939, in her hometown of Somerville, Tennessee.
Sarah dedicated an impressive 57 years of her life to teaching. She began her teaching career at Fayette County High School but spent the majority of her career at Fayette Academy in Somerville, TN. She was a beacon of knowledge and inspiration to all those who had the privilege of being her students. Miss Day’s passion for education shone brightly as she imparted wisdom and guidance to many throughout her career. She also served as a church pianist at Somerville United Methodist Church, leaving a lasting impact on numerous lives through her love of music.
Having earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Memphis State University, Sarah was a strong advocate for the power of education and continued learning. Her dedication to academics reflected her commitment to personal growth and development.
Outside of her professional pursuits, Miss Day found joy in various hobbies and interests. She adored her dogs and cherished the moments spent shopping at Lonis in Collierville. A big supporter of Memphis State Basketball, she cheered enthusiastically for her favorite team. Sarah also took pleasure in engaging with former students, relishing in their accomplishments and memories shared. Additionally, she treasured quality time spent with her great nieces and nephews, creating lasting bonds filled with love and warmth.
Sarah leaves behind her sister, Alice Exum, to cherish her memory. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Velma Alexander Day and her brother, Thomas Day.
A visitation for Miss Day will be Thursday, April 4, 2024 from 1 P.M. to 3 P.M. at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland. Her service will be at 3 P.M. at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Bro. David Reeves officiating. Interment will follow at the Somerville City Cemetery in Somerville, Tennessee.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers will be Eric Cook, Ladd Givens, Jason Bryan, Justin Hanson, David Kelley and John Settlemires.
Sarah Belle Day will be deeply missed by all those who knew her. Her legacy of kindness, knowledge, and love will continue to inspire generations to come.
