April is designated as National Poetry Month.
Union University is celebrating with the theme: “Receive, reconcile, react: a reading to celebrate National Poetry Month.”
The event was held at the school’s Harvey Hall.
Poet and President of the Griot Collective for West Tennessee, James E. Cherry, shares why learning to appreciate poetry is important.
“Poetry allows you to have perspective on situations as well as your personal life and society as well. It helps you understand who you are and where you’re going and what you want to be so I think poetry is essential, not only individually, but as a nation as well,” said Cherry.
At the event, Cherry read from his book of poems titled, “Loose Change.”
