University of Memphis celebrates artistic diversity with tattoo expo
JACKSON, Tenn. — One local university hosted a special art expo today, April 8.
The University of Memphis at Lambuth hosts one of these events each year.
This year, they are celebrating tattoo artists.
Local tattoo artists were invited to showcase their abilities Monday afternoon on campus.
Producer of the event, Linden Noe, tells us more on why they are highlighting this particular form of art.
“Often, in the past, tattoo artists have not been given credit for the artistry that they actually produce. But let me tell you, these folks are immensely talented. We have some wonderful artists right here in Jackson and the surrounding area and we decided to give them some fine art love,” said Noe.
A runway show was held at 2 p.m. as a competition for the tattoo artists to compete in and showcase their work.
Prior to that, an aerial silk show was provided by arrow athletics.
Amanda Scott, Aerial Instructor, tells us a little bit more about their work.
“Aerial silks and aerial hoop, it looks really fun and engaging, but its actually very, very, difficult physically and mentally. But, once you get past those obstacles, it’s really fun,” said Scott.
The art scene continues to grow bigger and better around West Tennessee, and especially in Jackson.
Noe agrees and talks about why that is important and great for the area.
“We think there’s a real renaissance of the arts happening in Jackson right now. How many areas our size can actually claim to have this much going on. So we’re thrilled to death.” said Noe.
The runway show and contest gave artists a chance to win up to $1,000.
This expo is sponsored by the art museum of the University of Memphis.
