Climate crisis worsens allergy season for Americans

JACKSON, Tenn. — More than 25-percent of Americans suffer from allergies, and two-thirds of those report experiencing the irritating symptoms of eye allergies.

From painful itching, burning, and redness to watery eyes, discomfort caused by allergies is impossible to hide and can range from annoying to intolerable.

Allergy sufferers have always been able to look forward to some moments of respite with the change of seasons, but as the planet continues to warm and everything has more time to bloom, those symptom-free times are getting shorter.

“Allergy season is 40 days longer than it has been in the past and pollen counts are two hundred and fifty percent higher,” said Dr. Tessa Sokol, Optometrist.

Climate change’s impact on allergies is being felt nationwide, with some areas experiencing pollen year-round, making the allergen onslaught even worse.

Warmer temperatures are also getting trapped in cities, intensifying air pollution.

To combat allergy flare-ups, you can work with your primary care physician to determine your allergies and the correct steps to feeling better.
