New playgrounds open at multiple Hub City parks

JACKSON, Tenn. — A ribbon cutting was held by the City of Jackson to celebrate the opening of some new, local playgrounds inside of city parks.

Many people attended this event and were very excited for the opportunities that these playgrounds bring.

Jackson Mayor Scott Conger explains more about Monday morning’s event.

“We’re here today to celebrate three playgrounds being opened,” Mayor Conger said. “This is a concerted effort to make investments in our parks and playgrounds for the quality of life throughout the City of Jackson. So this is just the beginning.”

These playgrounds are a part of a five year master plan. There is one in Paradise Park, one in Malesus Park, and finally one in Conger Park.

Tony Black, the Executive Director for the Recreation and Parks Department, talks about how much of an upgrade these playgrounds are.

“This playground was old and deteriorating and sloping. It would never keep the mulch in,” Black said. “This is a great addition to this particular area and also in Malesus, which was a very old [playground], and Conger playground equipment. So these three playgrounds are in different areas of the city, as the mayor mentioned.”

Black went on to say they are trying to broaden their scope to be equitable in their facilities.

Christi David, the parks operations manager, told us about how this is a big focus for them and why it is big for the community.

“I think it’s important all the way around for our kids,” David said. “We’ve been able to install five new playgrounds in the last three years. Most of these playgrounds that we are revamping are 25 plus years old, which is about the lifespan of a playground.”

David also said thinks there are three new playground projects that will be going up for budget this year.

All three of these playgrounds are fully open and operational.
