Love Your Block kicks off small home repairs for Spring
JACKSON, Tenn. — From now until May 9, the Love Your Block program will be working with 13 different homes in the Jackson area.
From landscaping to small repairs, they really are able to provide a lot of help. Abby Palmer, the City of Jackson Neighborhood Services Director, tells us more.
“Love Your Block is a mini-program from the City of Jackson,” Palmer said. “We provide small exterior home repairs, litter clean ups, neighborhood improvement projects for the community.”
For the rest of this month, a special team has come in to assist the program with these homes. These are people from all over the country who have come together to be a part of this team.
“We were lucky enough to get awarded an AmeriCorps NCCC team this year. So we have a team of six individuals that are here working with us for a month. So they’ll help us on all of our home repairs and we are very, very glad to have them,” Palmer said.
This team is based in Mississippi, but their members have come from Texas, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and California.
Alex Sanchez, the team leader, says AmeriCorps is a federal service that is dedicated to getting citizens out and helping in the public. He also tells us why it is a great program to be a part of.
“I would suggest that anyone who is younger, but even any age, because AmeriCorps has something for everybody, if you are interested in being a part of something bigger than yourself, or if you feel like there is a call you need to answer, definitely check out AmeriCorps,” Sanchez said.
After May 9, a new group will come in to assist the Love Your Block program with more homes.
The waitlist is currently closed, however, they hope to open it back up for applications next year.
