Chester County students learn the importance of agriculture
CHESTER COUNTY, Tenn. — Students in one county came together for a fun annual event while learning about an important part of life.
A day in the field with animals, tractors and Ag equipment welcomed students on a windy Wednesday.
“UT Extension Chester County, Chester County 4-H has been hosting these AG days here in Chester County for this makes our 7th year,” said Steve Rickman, Director, UT Extension ANR Agent. “We have two days back to back, today we are hosting Chester County Junior High School grades six, seven and eight — about 225 to 250 students per grade. Also with their teachers and staff members out here.”
Multiple stations were set up, including animal booths. And Brycen Faulkner has been around the 4-H program and agriculture since the 2nd grade.
“My biggest inspiration is all this equipment, you’re getting to watch it and run and watching the crop grow really,” Faulkner said. “It’s cool to be able to wake up next morning and see your crop coming out of the ground, and then just few months later getting taller and taller, and it’s it’s pretty neat watching the process.”
And Luke Moody has been apart of the 4-H since the 4th grade.
“My inspiration is my family, my grandfather and my uncle,” Moody said. “My grandfather started farming, I believe in the 70s, 80s and, you know, it was hard then and I see how far he’s come. And I know that’s what I want to do. And I love agriculture. And I see what my uncle John Cody’s done and I want to follow that. And I want to be a successful farmer.”
Moody also expressed the deeper meaning that Ag carries.
“People don’t really understand how much agriculture effects their lives, but it’s the biggest business in the world. It always has been,” said Moody. “In the Bible, you know, the biggest farmers, the most successful people was always the farmers.”
The students’ excitement and appreciation for Ag could be felt and seen.
“It’s very important, and without agriculture, you know, the United States wouldn’t be how it is, and we wouldn’t be here like we are today,” Moody said.
Rickman also expressed some exciting news for additions will be coming soon, because of the impact of Ag day throughout the years.
