FHU holds topping out for new dining hall, Chick-Fil-A

HENDERSON, Tenn. — Freed-Hardeman University hosted its inaugural topping out ceremony Wednesday for their new dining hall and Chick-Fil-A.

The last steel beam placed is a major milestone in the evolution of a building project.

The steel erection crew, construction team, designers and other invested parties sign the beam for posterity.

Following the ceremony’s close, the beam was lifted into place, and President David Shannon and FHU board member Tommy Gumm rode a construction lift and draped an American flag on the beam.

“It’s just a reminder that a big project takes a lot of people, but it also takes a lot of blessings from God to bring all of this together,” Shannon said.

While the exact origin of these ceremonies remains elusive, topping-out ceremonies have been integral to construction projects for centuries.

Once completed, the Chick-Fil-A will serve both the campus and the surrounding community.
