One resident transforms a hobby into a side hustle

JACKSON, Tenn.—A local resident transforms her hobby into a way to make some extra dough.

Shaniqua Smith, a Jackson resident, sits down with us to explain how her love of sweets became a new way to gain financial independence.

In just a short amount of time, Smith managed to launch The Box – Homemade Cookies. The venture began as a way to turn her love of baking sweets into a little extra cash.

She started with sending some samples to a relative who shared a photo of them to social media. Orders then began to flood in.

After taking local orders and selling her baked goods, she quickly found that her customers really liked her treats and often came back for more.

So Smith decided to take her business a step further. She launched a website, and social media page, giving customers various items to choose from and The Box- Homemade Cookies was born.

“I think its a total of nine cookies that we have. We have M&M, the popular one, snickerdoodle or chocolate chip. We have oatmeal raisin, toffee chocolate chip, pecan chocolate chip, and confetti…oh and the Oreo cookie, there’s so many!” Smith said.

The Box-Homemade Cookies has become a successful side hustle for Smith and she plans on continuing to grow the business.

Smith says she’d like to sell cookie dough and also plans to provide a delivery service in the future.
