Professor speaks at rotary club about local outreach projects

JACKSON, Tenn. — A professor at one local university shares how community involvement can change people’s lives.

He also shares what that looks like as the university collaborates with Area Disability Services as part of recent engineering projects.

Union University professor, Dr. Georg Pingin, visited the Jackson Rotary Club today to share information about engineering outreach activities currently underway at Union University.

He also touched on new opportunities available as the current engineering building, The Hub, is being developed.

Recent projects focus on assistive technology.

Students partner with the Therapy-Learning Center and the Star Center to design devices to help community members with disabilities and mobility restrictions.

“First of all it’s been extremely rewarding to see how a group of middle school students, high school students or college students can make a significant difference in someone’s life,” said Georg Pingin, Professor of Engineering and Hub Director at Union University.

Pingin came to Jackson from Germany as an exchange student in 1997, and has worked at Union University in the engineering department since 2010.
