JACKSON, Tenn. — Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, yet suicide can be prevented.

The annual West Tennessee ‘Out of The Darkness Walk’ will be held this October to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s education and support programs.

Jackson Fire Department’s Fire Chief, Don Friddle, is Volunteer Chair for the walk.

Research shows first responders appear to be at increased risk for suicide.

Firefighters and law enforcement officers are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty; and ems clinicians are more likely to take their life than members of the general public.

“There are resources, there are individuals, there’s people, there’s organizations that are there for you to help you through your dark times and to bring light into your life and to help celebrate life rather than end it,” said Friddle

The walk is taking place on October 26 at Jackson State Community College.
