Parkers Crossroads Battlefield Association to host Memorial Day program

NEWS RELEASE FROM PARKERS CROSSROADS BATTLEFIELD ASSOCIATION:

America’s Greatest Maritime Disaster
Sinking of the Sultana Memorial Day Program

The Parkers Crossroads Battlefield Association is hosting a special program on Memorial Day, May 27, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the Activities Building, 150 Federal Lane, Parkers Crossroads, TN.

The presentation by author and Memphis attorney Jerry Potter will tell the compelling story of the tragedy of the loss of over 1,800 soldiers recently freed from Andersonville and Cahaba prisoner-of-war camps at the end of the Civil War.

Mr. Potter has done extensive research on the 260-foot wooden hull steamboat “SULTANA” that blew up just near Memphis on April 27, 1865, making this “America’s greatest maritime disaster.”

The program closes with a cannon salute and taps to honor all deceased veterans, law enforcement, and firefighters.
