Mother continues fighting for her premature son with subglottic stenosis
JACKSON, Tenn. — One mother reached out to us sharing the story of one of her children.
Ashley Williamson has been grieving and fighting to keep her son alive, all while taking care of his siblings.
“I wish there was more support for parents that lose a twin or lose a child period– there was more help and resources for parents with disabled children. It’s impossible to do care taking and run a household,” said Williamson.
Brayden Williamson was born at 27 weeks, and 3 weeks after his birth he was intubated 9 times causing damage to his airway.
This unfortunately caused Brayden to have subglottic stenosis.
“I have not been able to work because he is on a ventilator and because he’s a critical airway he will not be able to go to like any daycare or anything. I would have to be his full time caretaker,” said Williamson.
Williamson doesn’t have that much help with taking care of her son.
“My mother died the day after Brayden was admitted here, at Le Bonheur. She died January the 14th so I’ve been grieving and fighting for him at the same time. I already had a really small family so my support has came from the nurses. He has the best team of nurses here,” said Williamson.
This entire situation has been hard on Williamson.
“It’s just hard trying to make it. Trying to save and move and to supply our everyday needs until we can get his surgery. Get nursing and I can get back to work,” said Ashley.
Over the next six months to a year she and her family will have to prepare for his surgery.
“He will have a full airway reconstruction surgery where they will have to take cartilage from his rib and rebuild his airway with it. He has a few milestones that he has to reach before he can have that surgery,” said Ashley.
Brayden’s siblings are keeping him happy.
“They are fine– I think they inspire Brayden, it’s the highlight of Brayden’s day is to see his siblings. His sister just absolutely adores him,” said Williamson.
She also shares he is the happiest baby and hasn’t let this get him down.
