Local health coalition awaits approval for new food pantries
JACKSON, Tenn. — We spoke to an agent of the Tennessee Nutrition and Consumer Education Program who told us that today, May 22, they wrapped up the details concerning a grant that will support those in need.
“Different people have different preferences and we just want to make sure no food waste is going on. Today, we just met to kinda talk about the different points on the grant that we have already submitted and so we’re waiting to see if we’ve got it, fingers crossed. So we just wanted to wrap up some things that we could submit for it if we needed to,” said Amber Morgan, TNCEP agent.
Morgan told us that by June 4th, the Hub City Health Coalition will know if they were approved to set up two new food pantries.
They also have a “Givebackjack” app that’s in development.
“We want to make sure that we have the correct amount for the budget so that we can get the two food mini pantries so that we can finish the development on the app. So that all the residents of Madison County will be able to locate the nearest pantry near them, whether it has food, whether it’s low on food or whether it’s food that they want to eat,” said Morgan.
Morgan also spoke on how they partner with RIFA Co-op to provide classes discussing food serving sizes.
They also provide information on how to coupon to save funds.
“We all just want to just kind of bring back the community. Everybody’s kinda been isolated and in their own little pockets, and we just want to make Madison County a community again, so just caring about others,” said Morgan.
