Shiloh National Military Park holds annual Memorial Day service
SHILOH, Tenn. — A program that honors the men and women who died serving their country, brought participants from near and far.
Shiloh National Military Park held their annual Memorial Day service in the Shiloh National Cemetery.
The Park Ranger Supervisor, Ashley Berry, said that this is one of the longest, continual running events in West Tennessee.
“To be here at this event today and to remember those who served and those who have given the ultimate sacrifices is important. For us, and for our children, and for our grandchildren to realize what a great place we live and the sacrifices that were made,” said Berry.
Berry also serves as the manager of the interpretation and education division at the national park.
“To be an employee of this national park and to host this event and to have the students participate in the band and singing. It’s just important that we all remember and I’m so thankful that we have this event every year,” said Berry.
Directed by Brandon Harvell, Kossuth High School jazz band performed “God Bless the USA”, while the Kossuth Middle School sang “America the Beautiful” and the battle hymn for Gettysburg.
Berry said that their exhibits area dates back to about 1988, but they are renovating the place to give visitors more to enjoy.
“Visitors now can have more of an experience. There’s a story that’s told. We have exhibits that talk about the cause and the coming of the civil war and what brought us to this point as Americans,” said Berry.
There is also a park store to go and shop for yourself or a family member.
“From books about the civil war and Native American history. There’s also patches and pens that people like to collect. There is also decorative glassware and toys for kids,” said Berry.
Berry stated that the exhibit is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
